18 Wheels of Steel: Across America is a game that puts simulation into truck driving. Well, let me rant for a second, and say that I really had my doubts about truck driving games having what it takes to actually be a genre that captured anyone's attention. I mean, there are many weird simulation games out there, but really, the rather tedious occupation of a trucker be so interesting to players was not in my list of games to go crazy about. But 18 Wheels of Steel: Across America really showed me why they can have such an impact. And it's all in the precision of the simulation. You see, most driving games are about the oomph and the speed, racing all sort of crazy vehicles on roads and circuits where you can go crazy, but trucking is a game of endurance and of relaxation. It's like a fishing game in that it combines long stretches of mindless driving, just following the road, with portions of great precision driving. And 18 Wheels of Steel: Across America does both of those things admirably, which is why it is such a classic. Don't sneer and think this to be nothing more than just another sim, it's not, it is still a great looking game and a game that can still keep you invested for long hours.
