Take cover!
Playing out a little like the more modern entries in the Beach Head franchise, Air Raid is a pretty simple shooter but which gets rather tedious rather quickly. It's okay if you just want to engage your trigger finger rather than your brain, but even in this respect, it's far from great and you might be better off with Cyberia or Rebel Assault for something that's at least a bit more engaging. The game throws you into World War II where you find yourself aboard a battleship. The enemy are coming for you so it's your job to take control of the gun turrets and blow them out of the sky before they do too much damage. You've got access to three different types of gun, these being standard bullets, missiles, and finally depth charges to take down incoming ships. The only real point to the game is to rack up as high a score as possible, and the game is really just about blasting your way through wave after wave of bad guys before they take down your ship. Air Raid is not likely to appeal to anyone but the most dedicated of hardcore shooter fans, and even then, it's not exactly Ikaruga. There's no denying that there's no shortage of action here, with 99 levels to blast your way through, but after about five minutes of play, you've already seen everything there is to offer here. While the presentation is okay, there's a distinct lack of flash or anything to really drag you in, while the visuals have a bit of atmosphere but are also short on appeal. If mindless shooters are your thing, try this, but otherwise steer well clear.
