A "tabletop" wargame
Warhammer 40k (as some call it) is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game, released by THQ in 2004, game that embeds fierce animation to the combat between the four main factions. This game has three expansion packs released since 2004, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. The gameplay is mainly focused on capturing and holding strategic points that contain resources necessary for building additional units in a futuristic dystopian setting, where humanity forged a galaxy-spanning empire. The plot of the wars is based on the constant struggle between The Imperium and the other three factions. The four factions are the Space Marines (that are essentially modified superhuman soldiers, members of the Imperium), the Orks (green skin muscular and aggressive humanoids), Eldar (elf like beings also seen as hi-tech enigmatic species) and Chaos Space Marines (Space Marines that serve Chaos Gods - malevolent entities that live in a different time-space called "the Warp"). The necessity of capturing strategic points is punishing for over defensive players because the resources from the headquarters may not be enough. Two primary resources exist, requisition (constantly generated by the army headquarters) and power (gathered by building generators). The units consist of squads not individuals, each squad being able of holding a maximum of 10 individuals at full reinforcement. There are also Vehicles (that are resistant to infantry attacks) and Walkers (vehicles that have heavy melee weapons). The game has also a morale system, the units having morale that influences their combat ability. The combat dynamics are exceptional within which you can see the Walkers essentially tossing away enemy with powerful attacks. The game interface and the graphics are great delivering a neat gameplay experience to the player. The singleplayer is not a strong point, the campaign being short, linear and played only from the Space Marines perspective. The player will eventually have the need to play skirmish battles of great difficulty. If you are a RTS player it is highly recommended you try this game out.
