Fun and varied cartoon platformer
As you might expect from a Disney-licensed game, Quest for Gold is a platformer that is similar to the likes of Lion King or The Jungle Book but which is highly charming and has enough original features to make it well worth investigating. The story revolves around Scrooge McDuck's quest to become the richest duck in the world and which sees him competing against Flintheart Glomgold in a competition that takes him around the globe in a 30-day quest. Whoever collects the most amount of treasure can declare themselves the victor and bask in the glory of all that glorious wealth. The player takes the role of Scrooge and is ably assisted by his plucky nephews as they embark on their quest. The game plays out in a mixture of styles, from traditional Rayman-style platform sections, to flying sections where you must avoid the attentions of the Beagle Boys. Other levels see you navigating a maze-like cavern and even a Pokemon Snap-type section where you must take pictures of various animals. Quest for Gold is a neat little platformer that makes good use of its source material and offers more than the typical licensed game. The various game styles are not all successful but the variety on display certainly keeps the player entertained and helps to make it stand out from the crowd. The graphics are highly appealing, with excellent recreations of the cartoon originals and which create an authentic feeling which again gives the game its own personality. Throw in plenty of references to the original show as well as some fun mini-games and you have all the makings of an enjoyable cartoon adventure.
