Standard dungeon crawling thrills
The original Dunjonquest was a sort of slightly graphically advanced version of classic rogue-likes such as Rogue which added in RPG elements to the dungeon crawling hack 'n' slash adventure formula. The game was followed by a couple of expansion packs, including this one and Curse of Ra, as well as a proper sequel in the form of Hellfire Warrior, but all of them were much of a muchness and can easily be skipped by anyone but the most hardened of genre fans. This one follows on directly from the original Temple of Apshai and features an entirely new dungeon with 150 rooms to explore. Gameplay is largely similar to its predecessor, with the player exploring, killing monsters, evading traps and gathering treasure. There is some semblance of a plot here, and you're on a mission to uncover the mysteries of a creepy old monastery and a local mage, but it's all pretty inconsequential stuff and the main focus is on the action and adventure. As far as these things go, this is reasonably entertaining stuff and if you have played and enjoyed the original, then you should get a kick out of this. There's nothing radically new here though, which is slightly disappointing, but the exploration and monster slaying remains reasonably compelling. There's certainly plenty to get your teeth into, although the weapon selection is a little lacking, and even veteran adventurers should find themselves challenged by what's on offer here. Visually, the game is crude but strangely appealing so if you do like old-school dungeon crawlers, take a look. Just don't expect to be blown away.
