Bizarre remake of a classic
This has to be one of the most bizarre fanmade remakes in the history of gaming. Unlike others such as Jetpac PC and Great Giana Sisters (not strictly fanmade but a blatant ripoff of Super Mario Bros.) this one takes the basic gameplay of a well known arcade hit, in this case the classic platformer Ghosts 'n' Goblins, and re-jigs it so that it now stars a mouse. Yes, that's right. Instead of the original's armour wearing hero Arthur, players now get to control a bold mouse as he embarks on his biggest adventure. The gameplay here is pretty similar to its inspiration, but if you're unfamiliar with it (and if that's the case, you need to change that now), it's a fiendishly difficult but endlessly rewarding action platformer which remains a classic of the genre. This update replaces the original's spooky graveyards and other hellish environments and replaces them with levels that are decidedly cuter and less scary and with enemies that are somewhat less threatening than skeletons and flying weird things that want to rip your face off (which the original had in spades). There are four levels here, which are a little disconnected in theme, jumping from rolling hills to sci-fi in a heartbeat, but the visuals are nice and vibrant, with good use of colour and some decent sprites. The platforming action too is as good as ever, with clever and challenging level design and tight, responsive controls which make playing a breeze. If you are a fan of Ghosts 'n' Goblins and its even better sequel, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, then be sure to check this out as it is a surprisingly decent little game.
