Epic giant robot thrills
Long before there was Titanfall, there was MechWarrior, the first in an epic series of first person shooters that players piloting giant robots armed with a fearsome array of high-powered weaponry. Ghost Bear's Legacy is an expansion pack for MechWarrior 2, so it retains the battle heavy gameplay of its source material but adds in a bunch of extra features to enhance the game's already substantial appeal. The narrative side of things takes place after the Refusal War of MechWarrior 2 and revolves around the desperate struggles of Clan Ghost Bear against the machinations of the Draconis Combine. What this means for the game is a series of hi-octane missions with the player in control giant walkers, engaging in hardcore assaults against the enemy across a variety of environments. By adding in a new clan, 14 new mechs are introduced, along with some new weapons to kit them out with, while the 12 included missions also open new locations such as outer space and underwater. If you've played and enjoyed the previous game, then this is a great addition to an already great experience. The essential elements of the pack are of course the same, with the graphics and interface all being identical, but the new additions do a good job of enhancing the appeal. The mechs themselves feel subtly different from those of previous games while the weapons are also satisfying and enjoyable to use. Combat remains as fast and furious as ever and although the graphics are starting to look a little dated, this remains top notch entertainment for giant robot fans. Check out MechWarrior 3 and MechWarrior 4 for more of the same high-octane thrills, while G-Nome and Heavy Gear make for nice alternatives.
