Star Wars: Dark Forces
You're a little short to be a Stormtrooper
A superb addition to the Star Wars universe which stands alongside X-Wing as one of the franchise's defining moments, this is a Doom-style shooter that really makes you feel part of the Rebel Alliance. It's got a gripping, well-told story, visuals which stand up well today, and perhaps most importantly really nails that Star Wars look and feel, making it a must play for any fan. This one follows the adventures of Kyle Katarn, a former Stormtrooper who must take down the Empire from the inside and prevent its new plans for another Death Star from reaching fruition. This translates into an extremely well implemented first person shooter, where you explore a series of environments familiar from the classic movies, while taking on Stormtroopers and other iconic enemies and wielding some of hi-tech weaponry. This one is a little different from the usual run 'n' gun shooters of the time, in that follows a more structured mission-based setup, with briefings and objectives all adding to the immersion and fun. Even twenty years later, Dark Forces still stands as a fine example of the FPS genre, and doesn't even need rose-tinted glasses to make it seem good. The visuals are a little blocky but they are still dripping in atmosphere, while the sound effects are just as great. The story is twisty and turny and will keep you hooked to the end, while the missions are engaging and exciting in equal measure, and are challenging enough to keep even genre veterans playing for some time. Overall, this is one Star Wars game which doesn't out a foot wrong and which deserves to be in any fan's collection.
Kill all sorts of bad Troopers
LucasArts has birthed over 30 different Star Wars themed games, ranging from arcade to puzzle to adventure games. Dark Forces is a very good Star Wars themed first person shooter game that centers around Kyle Katarn who a mercenary working on behalf of the Rebel Alliance. He must investigate the appearance of a new type of Imperial Soldier and discovers that this is a form of a Imperial Dark Trooper. Apparently, this isn't good. Now he is left to battle all kinds of troopers that are going at him. While not perfect, the gameplay is pretty intense and action packed but the less-than-average graphics kind of spoil the mood. The year of the making is 1995 and the whole thing could be done a bit better. Another thing that could be objected on is the silly AI and the fact that it all ends a bit too quickly for everybody's taste. Still, the game is challenging, the puzzle solid, and the action level is high. This is not the best FPS game - not the best Star Wars game either, but it's okay if you want to spend a few hours killing droids and troopers.
Star Wars FPS
It's an old one but a good one. Dark Forces was the original first person shooter based on Star Wars. The game had a good story, solid level design (despite not being a "true" 3D game), and was quite a challenge to complete. The enemy AI may seem simple by today's standards, but this was one of the better FPS games available at the time. The main reason it was so hard? Unlike most first person shooters, Dark Forces only lets you save your progress at the end of each level. Instead, you have a limited number of lives to use to complete a level. I can't tell you how many times I had to retry a level because of that little "feature" .
