Stunning collection of Infocom's finest
The name of Infocom is something of a legend in the interactive fiction genre, with an absolute stack load of classic titles to their name. This massive compilation represents a superb selection of some of their best known titles, so if you're curious about the genre or are a fan of Guild of Thieves or The Pawn, this represents an almost overwhelming way to check out what the fuss is about. There are 20 games included here, which is too many to go into too much detail about, but you have the first three Zork games, which make this worth getting alone. However, on top of this you also have the superbly creepy horror title that is The Lurking Horror, and which is almost guaranteed to scare the living daylights out of you. If comedy is more your thing, then The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, based on the classic novel, makes for a hilarious adventure, while Planetfall and Starfall are cracking science fiction themed games. Fantasy fans will enjoy Enchanter and Spellbreaker but the list goes on so there really is something for everyone here. While there are a few minor hiccups in quality here and there, on the whole this is a stunning package that bears the Infocom stamp of quality across the board. The writing in these adventures is uniformly superb, being clever, witty and inventive while the puzzles are equally as impressive. Each game is highly challenging and individually they will keep you going for some time but as a package this should last you the rest of your gaming life. Compilations really don't get much better than this but check out The Lost Treasures of Infocom II for another great lineup.
