Avoid this war at any cost
Although the War in Heaven could perhaps be applauded for at least trying to offer gamers an alternative to the usual graphic violence and killing seen in shooters like Doom, it unfortunately turns out to be a miserable experience that should be avoided. It's no surprise that it appears on many 'worst game ever' lists, as its combination of horrible visuals, tedious gameplay and a myriad other problems combine to create a truly horrendous experience. In theory, the game is a Christian-themed action adventure set in a bizarre medieval-style fantasy world and gives players the chance to take one of two paths: The Divine Path which leads to Heaven or The Fallen Path which sees you following Satan and entering into a war with the angels. Whichever path you take, you'll find yourself wandering around a few unusual environments, confronted with hissing monsters and other such enemies, while wielding a narrow range of weapons such as swords. On paper at least, this sounds like a fairly standard fantasy first person shooter, but this is a far cry from the likes of Hexen and Heretic and is instead a truly awful game. The setting is interesting but completely fails to engage due to being poorly presented, while the visuals are bad even considering the time in which it was made. The textures and details are ugly, while animation and level design are about as basic as it comes. Worse still, the gameplay is simply tedious, with very little to actually do other than wander around, occasionally waving your sword at some monster, while getting very very bored. All in all, a complete waste of time.
