Turbo Outrun
Cleaner, more playable Outrun; just as delicious
What makes Outrun my favorite game from the forward scrolling graphics era is the fact that while it was absolutely well done, it also had style. It had the open roadster car, the winding up and down roads that were a beauty to run about in, and it also had a beautiful construction, a certain elegance, which is furthermore enhanced by the graphical limitations. So, with Turbo Outrun you get that beauty and elegance, plus a great lot of levels, one better than the other, and more updated sprites, with more detail. It's not however a fake looking game, the graphical limitations definitely give it a great true retro feel. And it's even easier to control and more polished, and it will take you through all sort of locations, inspired by real locations. You just can't beat it for style, and that's enough to truly recommend it, no questions needed, and, together with the good Lotus III it will offer you lots of fun, transporting you in the good days of the 484 PCs that could hardly run these babies!
A fine example of an update
Turbo Outrun, an updated, flashier version of the original OutRun. Although this version is rather more attractive to the eye, it's also more advanced, the graphics we'll talk about later. The updated gameplay consists of an more advanced game engine, with better handing, and sounds. At the end of every stage you'll be allowed to select one upgrade, either A upgraded engine, high grip tires or special turbo. Depending on which order you choose your upgrades, will effect the gameplay. So learn the upgrades well. The Ferrari is also upgraded to an Ferrari F40, which is still rather popular by today's standards. The graphics for this version of OutRun look amazing, animation is a lot more smoother, tracks have better field and depth of view, breakable/smashable objects, more detailed drones/AI cars and the list goes on. Not to forget the sound, although the music doesn't seem that much improved the ambient sounds, engine, and voice overs seem rather much improved. This is surely a very big jump from the previous OutRun and it's a fine example of the word "Update".
