Undemanding underwater fun
You know you're in for simple time when the title of a game includes mention of the type of graphics used in its creation but fortunately, VGA Sharks is something of a guilty pleasure and makes for an entertaining time. It's undeniably straightforward and uncomplicated but therein lies its appeal and it's a perfect little time waster. The idea is about as basic as they come, with the player required to simply don diving gear and head underwater in search of lost treasure. Of course, given the game's title, it's no surprise to say that there are numerous sharks out to get you, along with other watery creatures of equal aggression, and which must be avoided if you are to succeed in your mission. All you have to do is manipulate the little diver around the screen, avoiding sharks while grabbing the treasure and if you enjoy simple old-school high score-chasing classics like Pacman and Galaxian, then there is much to enjoy here. The visuals and sound are of course about as simple as they come, but there's a nice variety of enemies to look forward to, with manta rays and jellyfish popping up alongside the titular sharks. Controls are likewise simple but are nicely responsive and certainly make picking the game an absolute breeze. The gameplay too is refreshingly simple but strangely enjoyable and it's easy enough to lose more time than you intend beneath the ocean waves. VGA Sharks is certainly no classic or even a must play game, but if you just want to kick back and relax, then it's worth checking out.
