Chomps

Arcade 1983 Dos Ensign Software Item collection

Yet another pill-guzzling maze game

After the insane success of classic arcade hit Pacman, uncountable numbers of clones and copies flooded the market, with the phenomenon continuing for some time after the game's heyday. Such clones include the likes of Capman and Pac Girl and Chomps follows in the footsteps of such games by adding absolutely nothing to the formula which made the original such a hit. Just in case you have been hiding under a rock, the basic idea of Chomps and its compatriots is to guide a cute little character (in this case a smiley face) around a series of mazes. Your sole goal is to gobble down all the pills which litter each level and once achieved you get to move on to the next one and do it all over again. Of course, things aren't that simple and standing between you and success are several monsters, replacing the original's ghosts, and which each have their own personality and method of hunting you down. Your only protection against being munched is to grab one of the power pills lying around, which will allow you to turn the tables and take them out (although only briefly as they always come back). There are a few random bonus items that crop up and which can be grabbed for extra points, while the four levels on display here increase in speed and difficulty as you progress through them. As far as Pacman clones go, this is no better or worse than any of the others on the market. The visuals are slightly less appealing than the original, lacking its distinctive design but the gameplay is as fun as ever. The four levels won't take you long to complete but you should have a good time doing it, which is perhaps the main thing.
