WWII flavored tank centered strategy game
Codename: Panzers - Phase One was a big deal back in the day. Just like the current World of Tanks game that has become a phenomenon, Codename: Panzers - Phase One managed to bring forth a very interesting concept of RTS like conflicts, mission based, where you controlled the tanks as well as other unit types. The economic portion of a regular RTS is taken away, to make the game more fluent and to accentuate the need for smart tactical decisions. And, in this department, Codename: Panzers - Phase One shines. Just like Blitzkrieg, the game allows you a multitude of tank based tactical options and strategies. The original thing about the game is that it features the concept of hero unit, a tank that has a few perks, both in terms of its firepower, durability as well as in the fact that it increases the morale of the troops nearby. The Ai while not the smartest you'll ever see is however conscious of your moves and will try to avert you from flanking, or from covering terrain, to gain access to areas that offer you an advantage. But, after a while its weakness shows: it generally prefers to camp in certain fortified areas while deploying other units towards you. At any rate, this tactic is nicely implemented and it will put you in a position of always being careful of your movements. Rushing in without a good assessment of the playing field will most of the times end in a game over. So, for tank aficionados, Codename: Panzers - Phase One is a sure bet, so give it a go.
