Unbecomingly cartoonish rally simulator
There is something out of place in Toyota Celica GT Rally, and after a bit of time I think I figured it out; at first I thought it was the controls or the behavior of the vehicles, but it's not that, these aspects of the game are pretty much in the same ballpark as most other 1990 racers, nope, it's the way the game is colored, if you can believe that! Yes, Toyota Celica GT Rally is a more than okay rally racer (for its time period), makes use of the same old forward scrolling sprite graphical style, but the colors are just too vibrant; the game's textures are simply too saturated, which creates a certain unrest for some reason. While it wants to be played as a simulator, the silly colors will put you in a mindset that has more to do with silly, childish cartoons, and this discrepancy sure doesn't work in the favor of this game. But, other than that, I can't say that there is anything else that bothered me about the game. Nope, in most aspects it is as playable and as enjoyable as you would want it to be. So give it a go, and if you can't get your fix from this one alone, try a bit of Richard Burns Rally as well, a game well worth its weight in gold in terms of oldschool rally sims.
